Mission:
The Board of Bar Examiners (BBE) is established by law under the General Laws of Massachusetts Chapter 221, Section 35. The Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) appoints the Board of Bar Examiners' five members. Subject to the approval of the SJC, the Board makes and upholds rules with reference to examinations for admission to the bar and the qualifications of applicants in accordance with SJC Rule 3:01.The Board evaluates the applicants' requirements, legal education and character and fitness to practice law for applicants petitioning the SJC for admission to the Massachusetts bar, either by examination or motion waiver. The Board prepares, administers and grades the bar examination and issues reports to the SJC, either recommending or not recommending applicants.
