For the salaries and other costs for a public benefit fraud unit within the department of state police; provided, that the unit shall investigate fraudulent or illegal use and receipt of direct public benefits, including but not limited to, transitional aid to families with dependent children; and provided further, that in conducting investigations, the unit shall work in cooperation with the office of the state auditor, the office of the attorney general, the department of transitional assistance, other state agencies and federal authorities, as appropriate
